    Common courtesy

Post  Violet on Sat Jan 28, 2012 12:00 am

When I was a kid.....it was ingrained into us that you gave up your seat on a bus if an older person was without a seat.

Men always used to hold doors open for ladies.

Bus drivers used to assist mothers with prams.

If you saw a wheelchair, or a mother with a pram you automatically stepped aside so they could get past.

Children sat still and quiet in public places.

I'm not actually that old...but now when out and about if a man holds a door for a woman he either gets glared at or the woman will snort 'I can manage' like he's actually insulting her.

Kids/teens will not stand for anyone on the bus except for the very rare exception.

Bus drivers tut and look at their watches while women struggle to get shopping bags a pram and two or three toddlers on the bus.

And it seems women of a certain age are concreted to the spot while they are gossiping and will not move for any pram or wheelchair, seemingly deaf to all but their gossip i've seen people ask three or four times for women like this to 'please let us through' til eventually they do step back tutting and glaring.

As for kids.... (perhaps I am old) their behaviour (in general) in public places is shocking! Running around and climbing on chairs in restraunts/cafes screeching and carrying on.

    What happened to common courtesy?

As you've noticed, it's not so common anymore.

    Sad, but true.

I know what you mean. Here in the south (Texas), good manners are important.

Still, I have noticed those manners diminishing. I don't know if it's because people from further up north are moving in, or just because children are no longer being taught respect for others. A lot of students at school - 7th and 8th graders - lack the most basic of common courtesies. You can hold open a door for them, and they'll not say one word of thanks. Myself and the teachers always shout to those individuals - "You're Welcome!"

However, whenever we visit the country, people wave as you drive past. People do that here, too, but they do it even more out in the country.

Not enough discipline from an early age. The children aren't to blame initially, and once they've grown their behavior is ingrained so they often don't even realize how rude and disrespectful they are.

The situation I find most annoying these days is in supermarkets. AND the worst offenders are men of around my age! Two trolleys at an angle across the aisle while they have a good natter.

My solution----"Excuse me, if you both put your trolleys at right angles to the displays, you will block the aisle totally."

It never fails and I am gone before they reach the stage of being aggressive and rude.

Exactly.... Good Manners come from the Parents teaching them... all comes down to respect for their elders, and if children have no respect for their parents when very young... well who can you blame. Vicious  circle
see monkey - do monkey.. kids copy everything when young, if never corrected then they continue to do.
Thank goodness as rough as my children can be at home - they know their place outside in general public.
You just have to watch school children in a bus station... it is embarrassing

My kids got smacked! for being naughty and disrespectful.... dam shame it was stopped and against the law.
Kids have no fear these days of anyone - it is all about looking cool in front of their friends and saving face..
but stick them behind bars and they cry like babies to the Warders...
