The way I understand it a medium has the ability to act as a 'channel' between the spirit world and the earth plane and is able to communicate with the spirits of the deceased.

Many people call psychics 'mediums' when in fact they are not , there is a difference, all mediums are psychic but not all psychics are mediums.

Mediumship is the term used to describe someone who claim to have the ability to communicate with the Dead or Spirit World. This is not yet been scientifically proven of disproved . From the scientific point of view a medium is simply doing a cold reading. Getting information from what is said. In face to face readings using facial and body reactions.

Testing the information given though rules a lot of this out.

    Modern Mediumship

    Physical Mediumship :

is the act of picking up energies from the other side. This can be done by voice communications where one talks directly to the Spirit. Or visually were one can see the Spirit and describe who is being seen.

    Mental Mediumship:

This is via thought or telepathy via the Medium. Nothing is seen or heard in the physical but in the brain only of the Medium. This is also know as trance Mediumship where the Medium can be either fully aware of the process or in full trance.

    Physical Mediumship:

This encompasses levitation, Automatic Writing, and visual sight of Spirit energy. Letting a Spirit for a time enter your body to speak.

TOO this is just HOW I preceive it.

I contend that we can't presently answer the question "What is mediumship exactly" and I say that on the basis of many discussions, debates and some falling out with folks over more than two years of trying.

To say what it is exactly requires a generally-accepted definition of the word 'medium' as a starter and those who know me also know how many times I've tried to engage with forum members here and elsewhere to find common ground. The first stage is to avoid looking in dictionaries - dictionaries simply reflect usage and definitions vary widely from one dictionary to another. Their definitions should not be seen as fixed, as invariable. Some words may evolve and their use may change considerably over time, this being seen in how new dictionaries reflect those changes.

Discussion of the various forms of mediumship may be interesting but forms are far less important than defining what mediums and mediumship is expected to do in the first place.

As for any "scientific point of view" well let's leave that to the scientists to work on. I suggest we have no need for a scientific definition because science has no means to assess the situation seen and/or experienced. When it has then we may wish to consider what it has to say - and I say that from a personal position of having scientific training and aptitude.

In conclusion I suggest that it might be time to drop the old words with their associated meanings and develop new ones which reflect what this current generation is seeing, feeling and hearing. Already for example perhaps channelling may be the new mediumship, a medium may have replaced a psychic.....

I'm prepared to drop the old and pick up the new meanings provided they're clearly defined - how about you?

I thoroughly agree with every word you say,Mac.
My own defination is to liken Mediums to different grades of the medical profession.
Specialists,Gps,nurses right down to the lowly profession of floor washers.
It takes training to bring someone up to the highest form of mediumship.
We all have the gift of 'sensing' from intution to 'seeing' but some more than others.
My penny's worth for what it's worth.

A spirit cannot enter your physical body as it is attached to your spiritual body.

I'm prepared to make the effort if there's a point in doing it.

I was only referring to the few words that cause endless confusion, not the whole English language or the slang whch masquerades as dialect!

Our Transatlantic cousins have already 'done a number' on English English but it's to be hoped we don't do it ourselves. But language isn't immutable - it changes according to usage. The grammar and vocabulary I learned in grammar school, though, will emerge from my good self as it always has, albeit with any necessary additional vocabulary.
