Anything could hurt when it comes to touching the body. It's a matter of how sensitive your body is. I could give two people a massage, and one could love it, and the other could complain it hurt. Even though the pressure was not changed. Each and every body is different. And it's hard to gauge how someone else would feel.

Violet it only hurts if you have a tender spot somewhere that may need medical attention.

Hi! I'm a reflexologist...feel free to ask me anything!
In terms of receiving a painful reflexology session, please know that there are some practitioners who use a heavier pressure and some who use a lighter pressure. In general, the lighter touch is taught more frequently in schools these days. Both methods are effective. However, as was already mentioned, typically when there is pain in an area it signals a possible imbalance in the corresponding area of the body. Therefore, it is usually an area that is emphasized during your session.
Visit my blog, Sole Stories, for more info on reflexology (and foot reading!).

I gonna take a look too.
I haven't had a session, but my friend has and was told she had a problem with her kidneys.
She did, a real bad infection.

Just wanted to explain the difference between reflexology and foot reading because some people think all reflexologists are also foot readers. Reflexologists may be able to figure out what's going on in the body by feeling/palpating areas on the feet and feeling "deposits" or by noting client sensitivity (as in above example). Foot readers visually look at the feet and toes specifically (toe readers) to determine personality traits and tendencies. I use foot reading for both personality and health cues to better understand my client's issues and needs - actually if you understand the personality, you have a good idea of the health too.
    Here's a website on toe reading: http://www.toereadingonline.com/

Thanks Soulstories, I picked up a book on reflexology the other day, it looks fascinating, is it possible to do this on yourself?

Yes you can work on the reflex points yourself, but it is much better going and having a reflexology done by a reflexologist, it is so relaxing lol, I often lay giving myself an hour's reiki whilst the reflexologist is working on my feet
