Thanks for sharing - interesting!  Wonderful to make your own house - eco-friendly no doubt!

In what way do you practise being an environmentalist?  I used to be a co-ordinator of a local Friends of the Earth group.  I cycled for some 40 years but nowadays it's mostly down to recycling and UPcycling (which I love to do - very creative).  I cook mostly from scratch so avoid most processed foods.

How does being qualified to do reiki work/fit in with being a semi recluse?

Hi ameliorate, well as an environmentalist I recycle everything, try to avoid plastic, I grow organic herbs and plan a veg garden for next year, we have free range hens too. I would love to make a difference somehow, like breeding and saving something that's going extinct. We plan to have bee hives on our plot next year, just letting a local bee owner put a couple of hives on our land we don't have to look after them just benefit from the bees and a few pots of honey. I cook from scratch too.

We have a timber frame house, we wanted an entirely timber house but the council seemed horrified at the idea and wouldn't allow it which was disappointing.

I did plan to be a Reiki practitioner, I had a room in our house and got a treatment bed, my husband even painted clouds and seagulls on the ceiling, so I had this magical room but eventually I decided I am just too reclusive and it wasn't for me, I didn't pursue it, I'm afraid I only give reiki to close family and send it to everyone else xxx

Thanks for your very interesting reply!  An enviable lifestyle!  Your house sounds great!

I made inroads towards self sufficiency in the 1970s - in my 20s (when it was very fashionable e.g. John Seymour's books on self sufficiency' came out then). Some of my friends moved out to Wales.
I was a keen member of WWOOF (working weekends on organic farms) - you may have heard of them and they are still going! Then I got accepted into a Welsh commune but got cold feet and so declined; a combination of reasons (I didn't have a car so would feel dependent on others/restricted, plus their diet seemed largely vegan and bland - various lentils).  It was a rich time for getting involved in nature e.g. foraging and using plants cosmetically, medicinally and culinary wise.

Now I have a naturalistic garden e.g. I converted the lawn into a lawn meadow and I welcome nature's gifts - appearances of elder, hawthorn and red valerian (a garden escape).

Bit of a shame not to be able to use your reiki.  Today I saw a placard outside a shop offering reiki to dogs!

My Parents bought John Seymour's book in the 70's too, it inspired them to move to the west of Ireland and buy a house and land, it is why we have an inherited plot now! Our life style is good but constantly on the verge of extreme poverty! We have to get creative when it comes to earning enough to live on. I have thought about Reiki for dogs, though I'd imagine you'd need to be quite sociable to do that as well.

Your garden sounds wonderful, well done to have a meadow instead of a lawn, we are absolutely anti mowers strimmers, chainsaws, spraying etc. I have heard of working weekends, delighted to hear they are still going strong. I am vegetarian but would also find a vegan diet too difficult xxx
